School Bus Operators Manual - S EndorsementThe S Endorsement Program for school bus drivers is administrated by ASTAC and created by Alberta Transportation in conjunction with industry personnel.  It is a 16 – 20 hour program containing 5 series.  The program is not currently available in digital format but will be soon.

Series 1:  Pre-Trip Inspection, On the Road, General Maintenance Tasks

Series 2:  Loading, Unloading & Transporting Passengers.  Passenger Management

Series 3:  Bus Manoeuvres & Defensive Driving

Series 4:  Emergencies, bus Evacuations, First Aid, Emergency Equipment and Mechanical Breakdown

Series 5:  Passengers with Disabilities, Mobility Aids and Child Safety Seats

Each series must be instructed in a classroom setting with some practical teaching.  After each series there is knowledge testing.

Train the Trainer Program:

ASTAC has 3 trainers in the Province, Michelle Kupchanko (Southern Alberta), Wayne Stade (Central Alberta) and Garry McRae (Northern Alberta).  The trainers operate a four day program training instructors on the S Endorsement program.

Applicants must apply to Alberta Transportation in either Calgary or Edmonton and be approved to take the instructors’ course.
